Antique Six Eye Motif Dzi Bead with Bloodspots (Ant-B-SiE-082624)

Antique Six Eye Motif Dzi Bead with Bloodspots (Ant-B-SiE-082624)

The six eyes on this bead do not announce themselves — they surface.

Most dzi beads present their motif as high contrast: dark ground, pale lines, clear edges. This bead works differently. The ground is a warm rose-brown — a reddish-clay tone with a dusty, almost heathered quality — and the six eye rings are rendered in a pale rose-cream so tonally close to the ground that the motifs read as emerging from within the agate rather than applied to its surface. In certain light the eyes are immediately visible. In others they recede, and the bead appears as a unified warm field with the faintest suggestion of pattern. That variability is part of what makes it hold the attention.

The bead measures 54.5mm × 13.2mm in an elongated slim spindle form. It is long and narrow relative to several other six-eye beads in the collection — longer than the plain six-eye At-042925-6E2 (41.4mm × 11.4mm) and At-053026-6E (54.9mm × 12.3mm), though similar in length to the latter while carrying a distinctly different colour story. The six eyes are distributed across the bead's full circumference — two or three eyes per main face, with narrow cream-beige stripe separators between each eye unit running perpendicular to the bead's axis. All six eyes are fully closed concentric compositions: an outer ring, an inner ring, and a soft dark pupil at centre. There are no open C-rings on this bead. Every eye has arrived at its complete form.

The surface is consistently matte throughout — not glassy, not polished, but the genuine, softened, slightly chalky finish of agate that has aged without buffing. This matte quality is one of the most immediate things you notice when the bead is photographed: it absorbs light rather than reflecting it, and the eye motifs seem to float within the surface rather than sitting on top of it. Along the mid-ridge and darker ground zones, fine micro-pitting is visible — the natural surface texture of 200–300 year old agate in its uninterrupted original state.

The end caps carry a warm terracotta-rose tone — slightly more saturated than the body, giving a gentle colour transition toward the drilled tips. The drilled hole interiors, most visible in Images 4 and 5, show a vivid warm orange-red: the agate's inner colour, undimmed by the surface patination that has softened the body over centuries of exposure.

This bead does carry minor cinnabar inclusions — present within the agate matrix and visible as a subtle warm diffusion in the surface, consistent with the original listing's description of bloodspots appearing as a fine mist in the patina. They are not prominent, not concentrated, and do not classify this as a bloodspot dzi. We disclose them here fully, as we photograph everything exactly as it is.

Compared to the other plain six-eye beads in the collection: At-053026-6E carries honey-gold end caps and open+closed eye variants on a darker chocolate-brown ground; At-042925-6E2 is pitch-black with bold open C-ring scroll work; At-092524-6EN through At-050725-6EN3 are the Naga Dragon Eye variants with an entirely different motif structure. This bead is the only plain six-eye in warm rose-brown with all eyes closed, a matte surface, and this tonally unified, low-contrast colour character.

The Six Eye (六眼) Motif

The Six Eye dzi — mig drug in Tibetan — is associated with the six realms of existence in Buddhist cosmology: the realms of gods, demi-gods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hell beings. A bead bearing six eyes is understood to offer awareness and protection across all six realms simultaneously — a comprehensive spiritual coverage that leaves no dimension of existence unguarded. In Tibetan medical tradition, the Six Eye is also connected to physiological wellbeing and the release from suffering (dukkha) — the bead is believed to support both physical health and liberation from the cycles that cause repeated harm. Six closed eyes, as found on this bead, carry the added significance of completeness: each eye has seen, and each has arrived at resolution.
