The six eyes on this bead do not announce themselves — they surface.

Most dzi show high contrast: dark ground, pale lines, clear edges. This bead works differently. The ground is a warm rose-brown, a reddish-clay tone with a soft, heathered quality, and the eye rings are a pale rose-cream so close in tone that they seem to emerge from within the agate rather than sit on top of it. In some light the eyes are immediately clear; in others they recede and the bead reads as one warm field with the faintest suggestion of pattern. That shifting quality is what holds the attention.

The bead measures 54.5mm × 13.2mm, a long, slim spindle. The six eyes run around the full circumference, two or three per main face, separated by narrow cream-beige stripes. Every eye is a fully closed concentric form — outer ring, inner ring and a soft dark pupil. There are no open C-rings on this bead.

The surface is matte throughout — not glassy or polished, but the softened, slightly chalky finish of agate that has aged without buffing. It absorbs light rather than reflecting it, which is why the eyes seem to float within the stone. Fine micro-pitting is visible along the mid-ridge and in the darker areas, the natural texture of an untouched antique surface.

The end caps are a warm terracotta-rose, a little richer than the body. Inside the drill holes (Images 4 and 5) the agate shows a vivid orange-red — the stone's inner colour, unsoftened by surface wear.

The agate also holds minor natural cinnabar inclusions, seen as a subtle warm mist in places. They are light and scattered rather than concentrated, and we mention them simply because we describe every bead exactly as it is.

The Six Eye Motif

The Six Eye dzi (六眼天珠) is associated with the six realms of existence in Buddhist cosmology — gods, demi-gods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts and hell beings. Six eyes are understood to offer awareness and protection across all six realms at once. The Six Eye is also traditionally connected with wellbeing and release from suffering, and fully closed eyes like these carry a sense of completeness.
