This bead reads differently from every angle — and one of those readings is a second eye you almost miss.

From Face A, the composition is expansive: a broad blue-grey oval dome fills the central body, framed by cream stripes at the shoulders and darker warm brown end zones. The eye here is architectural — a wide convex form that the banding wraps around rather than draws. Turn the bead ninety degrees and the same stone shows something else entirely: the banding converges into a strong V-shape, the lines meeting in a pointed formation at the centre of the face, reading as an abstract mountain or chevron rather than any eye at all. These two readings — the broad oval eye and the chevron landscape — live on the same bead and cannot be seen simultaneously. Then rotate to the drill end: the hole sits within a small warm brown oval, itself ringed by a cream band, creating a secondary naturally-formed eye-within-the-end that only reveals itself when the bead is viewed straight on from the tip. Three readings, one stone.

The blue-grey that dominates this bead is a cool, muted slate tone — not vivid, not heavy, but consistent and calm throughout the body banding. The warm dark brown at the ends provides the contrast, and between them, narrow cream and white bands encircle the shoulders and mark the transition zones. The overall palette is restrained compared to more dramatically banded agate pieces — this bead rewards extended looking rather than immediate impact.

At 50.5×15.8mm the proportions are broader and more rounded than many naturally-formed barrels of similar length — the bead sits wide in the hand, and both ends taper more gently than a standard elongated fusiform. No etching, no applied motif, no acid treatment of any kind — the entire composition is the stone as found. Full gloss is consistent throughout. No chips or cracks are observed independently.

The One Eye Motif

In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the one eye dzi (གཅིག་མིག, chig mig) carries the energy of the all-seeing wisdom eye — the capacity to perceive clearly and without obstruction, associated with Mahakala's wrathful clarity. A naturally-formed one eye bead — where the stone produces the motif from within its own banding structure — holds particular significance within Tibetan understanding: the motif is considered inherent rather than applied, a quality the stone brought with it from the earth rather than one placed upon it by human hands. That this piece presents a secondary eye at the drill end, also naturally formed, adds an unusual dimension to a type that is already considered rare within the broader dzi tradition.
