The eye on this bead was never etched — it grew there, one layer at a time, over millions of years.

The central zone of this agate barrel resolves, from one specific angle, into a composition that the stone made entirely by itself: concentric oval bands of cream-grey and warm beige converging on a warm brown oval at the centre, framed by a bright white outer ring where the banding meets the pitch-black ends. It reads as an eye — not because anyone drew it, but because the internal structure of this particular agate stone happens to produce exactly that concentric form when cut and polished through its natural banding axis. Rotate the bead and the composition shifts: from one angle the eye is clearly centred and resolved; from another the banding separates into parallel lines; from a third, only an arc of cream curves across the dark field. This is a characteristic of naturally-formed motifs, and it is part of what makes each one unrepeatable.

The two colour zones of this bead are strongly distinct and clearly separated. The ends are pitch-black — deep, opaque, and consistent from drill hole to shoulder, confirmed across all white-background photographs. The central band is naturally banded agate in warm beige, cream, grey-beige, and warm brown — the layers fine and closely spaced through the outer rings, opening into a broader warm field at the centre. The white transition stripe between the black and beige zones is sharp and clean, giving the bead a graphic two-tone character that reads clearly even at a distance.

At 54.4mm this is a substantial bead with good presence in the hand. The taper toward both ends is pronounced — more pointed than many naturally-formed barrels — and both drill ends are clean with no chips or cracks observed independently. The full-body gloss is consistent throughout both the dark and light zones.

The One Eye Motif

In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the one eye dzi (གཅིག་མིག, chig mig) is associated with Mahakala and with the concept of the all-seeing wisdom eye — the capacity to perceive reality clearly and without obstruction. A bead carrying a naturally-formed one eye is considered particularly significant: the motif was not placed there by human hands, but emerged from the stone itself. In Tibetan understanding, such stones are sometimes described as having been formed by celestial forces — the motif understood as inherent to the stone's nature rather than applied to it. Whether held as a spiritual object or appreciated for its remarkable natural aesthetics, a naturally-formed one eye bead occupies a distinct place within the broader dzi tradition.
