Naturally-Formed One Eye Motif, 50.3×20.5mm, Blue-Grey & Olive Banded Agate (N-N-071426-1E4)
🪨 Genuine agate. Unretouched photos. What you see is what ships.
The eye on this bead is not white — it is a pale olive-grey, almost khaki, sitting within layers of cool blue-grey banding that give this piece a colour palette unlike anything else in the naturally-formed series.
This is a new naturally-formed banded agate dzi — no acid etching, no applied motif. The eye was formed entirely by the stone's own mineral banding, laid down over geological time and then shaped and drilled to produce the bead you see here. The pale olive-grey zone that constitutes the eye sits at the centre of the main face, framed by the surrounding banding in a diamond or rhombus orientation — wider at its horizontal axis than at its vertical, the pale zone reading as a light field within the cool darker bands that surround it.
The colour palette across this piece is exceptional among the naturally-formed pieces in the collection. Cool blue-grey banding dominates the body — a tone that reads as genuinely blue in the photographs, shifting between steel-blue and cool mid-grey depending on the light angle. Within and alongside this blue-grey, a pale olive or khaki-grey appears in the lighter band zones, including the eye itself. Deeper charcoal-grey banding lines run as darker accent bands across the body. The end caps bring in warm grey-brown at one end and a darker, more concentric-banded character at the other — the drill-end photograph clearly showing the fine agate micro-banding structure circling the drill opening.
All of these colour zones are entirely natural — the product of successive mineral deposits in the original agate formation. No two rotations of this bead present the same composition: the blue-grey banding shifts in width and prominence, the olive eye zone moves across the face, and the interplay between the dark charcoal lines and the lighter zones creates a different arrangement at each angle.
At 50.3×20.5mm this is one of the largest naturally-formed barrel pieces in the collection by diameter — the widest dimension approaching that of the 70.7mm flagship natural one eye piece, but in a more compact overall length. The polish is high-gloss throughout, clean and consistent. No chips or cracks observed from available photos.
The One Eye Motif
In Tibetan dzi tradition, the single eye is the eye of wisdom — the eye that perceives reality clearly, without distortion or obstruction. It is associated with Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara), the bodhisattva of compassion, whose all-seeing gaze is understood to extend to every being in every realm of existence. The single eye also invokes the concept of the "third eye" in tantric practice — the faculty of insight that perceives what the ordinary senses cannot. On a naturally-formed bead, where no human hand has placed the motif, the single eye carries an additional dimension: the form arose of its own accord, the stone producing the symbol without intervention, which in the Tibetan understanding makes it a discovery rather than a creation — a sign recognised rather than made.
