This bead is two colours, not one — dark brown at both ends, pitch-black through the centre — with a single eye and flowing line repeating four times around it.

It is a new Taiwan dzi in natural agate, carrying the Four Eye motif in cream-white on a two-tone ground. The end caps (Images 6 and 7) are a warm dark brown; moving inward, the ground deepens into a dense pitch-black through the body, giving the bead a gentle gradient from end to end.

The motif pairs one eye ring with a flowing S-curve, repeated four times around the bead — one eye and curve with each quarter turn. Images 2 to 5 show the four rotations, each unit sweeping a little differently. Turned in the hand, the four link into one unbroken flowing pattern.

The form is a standard barrel with gently tapered ends, and the drill holes are clean. There is a minor surface divot at one end — a small mark, not a structural flaw. No cracks.

This is a new bead, made in Taiwan within roughly the last 20 years using the traditional dzi crafting technique.

The Four Eye Motif

The Four Eye dzi (四眼天珠) is believed to remove obstacles from the wearer's path, smoothing the way to success. Four is linked with stability and the four directions, giving the motif a steadying, clearing quality. The flowing line between the eyes suggests obstacles cleared continuously along the way.
