New Six Eye Motif Dzi Bead, 58.4 × 14.0mm, very deep dark brown agate fusiform (N-062226-6E)

We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

Rotate this bead 90° and the six eyes become something else entirely — open curves stacked in rows, wrapping the body like a continuous script.

From the front, the Six Eye composition is clear: three fully closed concentric ring eyes per face, evenly spaced along the length of the bead, divided by vertical H-bar elements and flanked by partial stripe elements at each end. The eyes are rendered in a muted warm off-white — not bright cool white, not sandy-beige, but a slightly granular, softly textured cream-white that sits between those two registers and differs from the motif colour of every other new dzi in this session. Against the very deep dark warm brown ground, the ring eyes read with solid presence: each one a complete closed circle with a darker ground interior, the outer ring clearly defined against the body.

Rotate the bead 90° to the side — as seen in Images 4 and 5 — and the same motif lines resolve into a different composition entirely. The closed rings, now viewed from the edge, become open downward-curving C-forms stacked in rows across the body, with the horizontal stripe bands reading as dividers between the rows. This is not a different motif — it is the same etched lines reading differently from a different angle, the geometry of the concentric ring eye producing a scroll-like wrapping pattern when seen from the side. The bead presents two visual languages simultaneously: closed protective eyes from the front, flowing curved lines from the side.

The form is an elongated fusiform, 58.4mm in length and 14.0mm in diameter, with a notably asymmetric taper — one end (visible in Images 4 and 5) is more bulbous and rounded, the other tapers more sharply to a narrower tip. Both drill holes are small and cleanly centred at their respective ends, visible in Images 4 and 5. The surface is semi-gloss with a slightly matte quality in the etched zones — the motif lines have that fine-grained texture that distinguishes this bead from the high-gloss DW3 and the granular matte DW2, sitting between them in surface character.

The ground is a very deep dark warm brown — deeper than the ground of DW2, warmer and browner than the ground of DW3, and consistent throughout the body. At the tapered ends the warmth of the agate's natural banding comes slightly closer to the surface, visible in Images 4 and 5 as a subtle lightening at the tips.

This bead is newly crafted within the last twenty years. It is not an antique or ancient bead. No cracks or chips are visible in any photograph. Several minor surface marks consistent with new agate production are present at close examination, none structural.

The Six Eye Motif

The Six Eye motif (六眼天珠) is one of the most significant in Tibetan dzi tradition, associated with the Six Syllable Mantra — Om Mani Padme Hum — and through it with Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion. Each eye is understood to correspond to one syllable of the mantra and one of the six realms of existence, making the Six Eye dzi a complete compassionate statement: a bead that holds all six realms in its composition and invokes the mantra that transcends them. It is believed to improve physiological wellbeing, protect against misfortune, and support liberation from the cycle of suffering. On this bead the six eyes are distributed three per face, evenly spaced, with the full count readable from a single straight-on view.
