Pair of Wave Motif Dzi, 17.1×11.0mm & 17.2×10.5mm, Peach & Honey Agate (At-073026-WPair)

These two beads share a motif and an age, but not a colour. One is pale — a soft peach-cream ground, luminous and cool, the etched wave sweeping across it in broad cream-white arcs that almost disappear into the light tone of the stone. The other is warm — a deeper golden-honey to ochre-tan ground, richer and more saturated, the same wave banding reading with stronger contrast against the darker field. Side by side they register immediately as a pair, and immediately as distinct from each other.

The wave motif on each bead is formed by bold, flowing diagonal cream-white bands that sweep across the body of the bead from one end to the other — broad curves rather than tight lines, the etching working with the natural banding character of the agate to produce a composition that reads as both applied and organic. On the pale bead the wave elements blend softly into the ground, the contrast gentle and diffuse. On the honey bead the cream bands stand out more sharply against the warmer, deeper field, and the surface carries a fine speckling in the golden zones — small natural inclusions in the agate that add texture to the ground and distinguish this bead's character further from its partner.

At 300 to 500 years of age these are compact antique pieces — at just over 17mm in length each, they are among the smaller barrel dzi in the collection, their proportions closer to a barrel bead used in a multi-strand or stacked context than the larger single-wear formats. Both drill holes are small and clean. No cracks or chips observed on either bead.

Pair colour rule applied: The pale bead carries a soft peach-cream to blush-white ground — cool, light, and luminous. The honey bead carries a warm golden-ochre to tan ground — deeper, warmer, and more richly saturated. These are not the same colour and must not be described as such.

The Wave Motif

The wave motif on Tibetan dzi beads is understood as a representation of the continuous flow of energy and life force — the undulating movement of breath, water, and the forces that sustain existence. In Tibetan Buddhist and Bön traditions, the wave form evokes the uninterrupted continuity of cause and effect across lifetimes, and is associated with the protection of the wearer's vitality and with the harmonious movement of auspicious energy through the body and its surroundings. A matched pair of wave dzi — carrying the same motif in two complementary colour registers — is considered especially auspicious, the two tones understood as the pairing of complementary energies in balance.
