Heaven & Earth Motif Dzi Bead with Bloodspots, 36.7×10.6mm, Dark Brown Agate (V-082123-HEBS)

The circle on this bead is not decorative — and under magnification, the cream zone that frames it is scattered with individual dots of orange-red that read almost as a second pattern.

This is a genuine vintage Taiwan dzi, produced in the 1980s and finished in high-quality natural agate. The ground is two-zone: warm chestnut-reddish-brown at the drilled end tips — clearly visible in the angled end-cap shots — deepening to a rich dark brown through the central body. The Heaven & Earth motif is boldly drawn, with a large oval cream ring dominating the primary face and the stepped square Earth composition occupying the reverse. On the circle face, the broad cream ring frames a deep dark oval centre, giving the bead a focal, almost eye-like presence; on the square face, the stepped cream lines distribute across the full width of the bead in a more geometric arrangement. The two faces are substantially different in visual character — they do not read as the same bead from opposite sides.

The cream zones carry a warm ivory tone with the characteristic softening of over four decades of vintage age. Surface marks are visible along the equatorial area in the photos, consistent with vintage wear — disclosed here as found. No cracks are visible in any of the white-background photos; this is my own finding from the images. The drill channel is cleanly executed at both ends, centered within the warm chestnut-brown stone at each tip.

Bloodspots

Three macro photographs document cinnabar (硃砂, zhusha — mercuric sulfide) inclusions in exceptional clarity across the cream zones of this bead. The inclusions present as vivid individual pinpoint dots — orange-red to vermillion in colour, the most saturated cinnabar presentation in this collection's vintage batch. Scattered broadly through the cream field, they are visible across the Heaven circle zone, the cream bar bands, and the boundary areas between cream and the dark ground. Individual dots vary slightly — some reading as bright orange-red, others as deeper crimson — but the character is consistently vivid throughout every documented zone. Distribution pattern: cream-zone micro-dots. The presence is broad and evenly scattered, without any single area of especially dense concentration.

The Heaven & Earth Motif

The Heaven & Earth motif is one of the most symbolically complete compositions in the dzi tradition, pairing the circle (Heaven, 天) with the square (Earth, 地) to express the unity of cosmic opposites — the balance of yin and yang, the alignment of the celestial and the terrestrial. A bead carrying both symbols is traditionally associated with harmony between opposing forces, the removal of obstacles, and the flow of wealth and good fortune. It has long been a favoured piece in business and commercial contexts, where the balance of heaven and earth is understood as the alignment that allows prosperity to take hold. On a vintage piece with vividly documented cinnabar inclusions, the symbolic depth of the motif is matched by the physical richness the stone itself carries.
