The two drill holes on this bead are not just holes — they are the centres of two eyes, each one ringed in white, completing a composition that wraps the entire sphere.

This is a round dzi, and on a round dzi there is no fixed orientation. Turn it and the equatorial band of eight lotus-framed cells rotates past you one at a time, each one a rectangular field of white etching enclosing a curved arch and a centred lotus element. Tilt it toward either pole and a single large concentric-ring eye opens up, its centre exactly where the drill passes through the stone. The two polar eyes and the six equatorial cells together account for all eight eyes — but you never see them all at once. The bead has to be turned to give them up.

The stone is white agate — a pale warm grey-white that sits in a different register entirely from the dark-ground dzi more commonly seen in this tradition. The etched lines read as stark bright white against it, the contrast softer than on a black or brown ground but the composition no less precise. In the glossier zones of the ground, the agate's translucency shows through; in the etched lines, centuries of crystallisation have built up a granular, matte surface texture that is one of the clearest age signals a very old dzi can carry. The white lines on this bead are not smooth — they are rough with mineral accumulation, and that roughness is what makes them old.

The surface throughout shows age-consistent crystallisation across the etched zones, with partial gloss retained in the ground between the lines. This combination — crystallised etching, translucent ground zones, micro-surface matting — is fully consistent with the 1,000–2,000 year age estimate. I independently confirm no cracks and no chips.

The Eight Eye Lotus Motif

The eight eye dzi (八眼簾天珠) carries one of the most auspicious numerical associations in Tibetan Buddhist cosmology. Eight corresponds to the Noble Eightfold Path — right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration — the complete framework the Buddha set out for the cessation of suffering. The lotus element woven into the eye frames adds a second layer of meaning: the lotus rises through water and mud to bloom in pure light, a symbol of enlightenment arising from the ordinary world. Together, eight eyes and lotus frames make this one of the more complex and symbolically layered motif combinations in the dzi tradition. The polar placement of two eyes at the drill ends is a refinement seen on older spherical dzi — the entire surface of the bead becomes motif, with no zone left unmarked.
