Ancient Eight Eye Dzi Bead, 51.3×13.0mm, warm grey-brown agate, 500–700 years (Ac-071026-8E)

We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

The eight eyes on this bead are not all in the same row. They are distributed across the full circumference in a multi-register arrangement — some faces carrying three in a horizontal sequence, one face carrying five across two registers, the count only completing once you have turned the bead all the way around. The composition changes at every rotation: a single clean row on one face, a stacked arrangement on another, a deeper-toned natural banding zone on a third where the agate's own geology breaks the visual rhythm before the motif resumes. Each face is a different reading of the same bead.

The ground colour is a warm grey-brown — a muted taupe that shifts slightly between faces depending on the underlying natural banding of the stone. This banding is visible as faint diagonal lines running through the agate on certain faces, a characteristic of the material itself and a marker of the stone's quality. The cream-white motif lines sit cleanly against this ground, well-defined and intact. The etched circles are sharp and consistent across all eight positions.

The end caps are visibly warmer in tone than the body — a reddish-brown at both drill ends, shown clearly in the angled photographs. Both drill holes are small and clean, with no chipping or damage at the rims. The surface across all four faces shows age-consistent weathering marks — fine, even, and without structural compromise. No cracks are present anywhere on the bead.

At 51.3×13.0mm this is a substantial piece. The length allows the eyes to be generously spaced across the circumference without crowding, and the warm grey-brown ground gives the cream motif lines room to read at full contrast. The natural banding that runs through the stone adds a further layer of visual depth that no younger or artificially produced bead could carry.

The Eight Eye Motif

The eight eye dzi (八眼天珠) is associated in the Tibetan tradition with success across all endeavours — each eye understood to extend the wearer's capacity in a different domain of life and practice. Eight is a number of wholeness and completeness in both Tibetan Buddhist and broader Asian cosmological thinking, connected to the Noble Eightfold Path (八正道, bā zhèngdào) and to the eight auspicious symbols (八吉祥, bā jíxiáng). An eight eye bead is understood to invite comprehensive good fortune, removing obstacles in all directions and supporting success in both worldly and spiritual undertakings.
