Eight Eye Motif, 50.3×12.5mm, Very Dark Brown Agate (At-073126-8E)

Eight eyes on this bead distribute as four and four — two groups of four, each arranged in a 2×2 grid on opposite faces of the barrel, with the full composition only completing when the bead has been turned all the way around. Looking at one face you see four eyes at once: two in an upper row, two in a lower row, the pairs linked by bold pointed cream V-forms that press inward between them from above and below. Turn the bead to the transitional face and the composition reorganises — two eyes remain visible, now framed by broad sweeping arch elements that curve around them from the corners. Turn further and the second group of four appears, a mirror of the first, completing the count.

This is the first antique eight-eye dzi in this collection, and the motif carries a compositional ambition that matches the count. The cream lines are bold and wide throughout — the pointed connector frames between the eye pairs are substantial elements in their own right, not merely separators, and the arch forms on the transitional faces give those faces a strong independent character. At 50.3mm this is a substantial antique barrel, and the eight eyes fill it with a density that leaves very little of the dark ground unoccupied.

The ground is a very dark brown throughout the central body — deep, warm, and consistent across all four flat-lit white-background photographs. The end caps at both drill tips are a warmer, lighter brown — the agate's internal colour at the drill points, distinctly lighter than the body and warm in tone. The cream motif lines are bright and bold, the contrast between them and the very dark ground strong at this age range. Fine age-consistent surface micro-texture is present across the dark body zones. No cracks or chips observed.

The Eight Eye Motif

Eight is a number of completeness and auspiciousness in multiple strands of Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The eight eyes of this dzi are understood in relation to the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Tibetan Buddhism — the Ashtamangala — whose collective presence is considered to bring comprehensive blessing across all dimensions of life: the parasol of protection, the golden fish of abundance, the treasure vase of wealth, the lotus of purity, the conch of proclamation, the endless knot of interdependence, the victory banner of accomplishment, and the dharma wheel of teaching. A bead carrying eight eyes is said to bring the wearer under the protection and blessing of all eight simultaneously, with each eye representing one of the eight streams of auspicious energy.
