One of these beads is pale and one is dark — and the single stripe across each one is the same deposit on two opposite stones.
Bead A is a cool milky pale grey-white, its ground almost luminous, natural honey-brown and dark brown agate banding moving through the pale material like slow currents. Bead B is a deep dark grey-brown at its body, nearly pitch-black at its darker end cap, with warm honey-brown agate variation emerging at one tip like a colour hidden inside the stone. They were not selected to match. They were selected to pair — and the calcification stripe that runs across the central body of each bead is the same material, the same mineral accumulation, on two stones that couldn't be more different from each other.
That calcification zone — the "single stripe" — is not an acid-etched line. It is a broad band of natural mineral deposit: sandy-grey to warm grey-white, rough and granular in texture, built up across the central body of each bead over centuries through contact with mineral-rich environments. Within the deposit, a thin bright white mineral line runs horizontally through the centre — the most defined line in the zone, visible on both beads across multiple photographs. The edges of the deposit are irregular — softened and uneven in the way that natural accumulation always is, as distinct from the crisp edges of an etched stripe as anything can be. This same character of calcification appears on At-030420-1SNP (Antique Natural Patina Agate Dzi); the difference here is that these two beads are ancient rather than antique, paired rather than single, and their body form is unlike anything else in the collection.
The form is a bicone — two truncated cones meeting at a sharp shoulder ridge at the widest point of the body, tapering to bullet-rounded tips at both ends. Not fusiform. Not cylindrical. Not barrel-shaped. The double-cone shoulder ridge is clearly visible in all lateral photographs and gives both beads a compact, angular mass that is entirely different from any elongated bead in the Chung dzi group. At 25mm length and approximately 9mm diameter, they are short and wide relative to their length — more gem-like in proportion than the long tubular ancient nineteen-stripe pair Ac-080420-19SChung (Ancient Nineteen Stripe Pair) or the elongated fusiform ancient seven-stripe beads.
Both beads carry high-gloss polish on their ground zones — the pale agate of Bead A catches long white highlight streaks across its surface, and the dark ground of Bead B reflects an equally strong gloss. This is a surface that has been worn smooth and polished through centuries of handling, not a matte weathered piece. The drill holes at both tips are small and centrally placed; the interior drill channels show warm honey-brown to reddish-orange agate colour (confirmed in Images 8 and 9), with Bead B's warm-toned tip end — visible in Image 9 — a particularly striking contrast against its dark body exterior. Condition disclosures: a small S-shaped mineral swirl inclusion on Bead A's left ground zone (Image 2, fully disclosed); surface roughness and a small chip area on Bead B's right end cap (Images 5, 7, 8, fully disclosed). No structural cracks on either bead.
The Single Stripe Motif — 瓊珠一線紋
The single stripe (瓊珠一線紋) represents an unbroken circuit — a line without beginning or end that encircles the bead completely, dividing it into two zones while connecting them through its own continuity. In Tibetan and Himalayan collecting tradition, the single stripe is associated with unbroken success and the persistence of fortune across time. On this pair, the stripe reads entirely differently on each bead — nearly invisible against Bead A's pale ground in certain lights, boldly contrasting on Bead B's dark surface — but the meaning is the same: one unbroken line on each stone, held there by the earth itself rather than by human craft.
Motif: Single stripe (一線紋); one broad natural calcification deposit band across central body of each bead; thin bright white mineral line within deposit zone; NOT acid-etched — natural mineral accumulation; irregular deposit edges consistent with natural formation
