The pattern on this bead was not made by any human hand — the dark band at its centre is the stone itself, and the stone chose to be two colours.

The Chung dzi (措思天珠 / Cuòsī Tiānzhū) occupies a singular position in the dzi tradition precisely because of this fact. Every other dzi in this collection carries a motif applied to its surface — acid-etched lines, shaped by human intention, placed deliberately on the agate ground. The Chung dzi is the exception. Its dark central band and pale end zones are produced entirely by natural geological banding within the agate, formed during the stone's creation over millions of years, visible on the surface because the bead was polished to reveal what was already there. No etching. No motif lines. No human mark anywhere on the surface.

What the photographs show is the stone in its polished natural state. The dark central band occupies approximately forty percent of the bead's total length, running the full circumference in a deep cool grey-brown tone — the darkest layer of the natural agate banding. On either side, the stone transitions through a soft warm intermediate zone before opening into broad ivory-cream end caps that taper to the drill holes. This transition is not a hard edge — it is a gradient, visible in Images 3 and 4 as a gradual movement from cream through a warm grey-cream before deepening to the full dark central tone. This gradient is itself a product of the natural layering structure of the agate, and it is one of the most visually distinctive features of this piece.

The surface is high-gloss throughout — the full bead has been polished to an even, smooth finish that maximises the depth and translucency of both the dark and cream zones. Images 5 and 6 show the end caps at close range: the ivory-cream at each end carries a slight internal luminosity, the natural translucency of quality agate visible through the polished surface. The drill holes at both ends are small, precisely centred, and cleanly executed. A fine hairline is present on the upper surface of the dark zone on Face A (Image 2), a natural surface age mark disclosed here in full. A small natural dark inclusion sits in the lower area of Face B's dark zone (Image 3) — an internal feature of the stone, not surface damage.

The body form is a short wide fusiform: compact, substantially wider relative to its length than most dzi in the collection, with a broad equatorial width and a confident, weighted presence. At 38.2mm × 11.5mm the proportions give this bead a presence in the hand that belies its modest length.

This bead is explicitly different from the Heaven & Earth dzi beads (At-121824-HE2, At-082324-HE3) in the collection, which also present dark-ground compositions with pale elements. Those beads carry etched oval and rectangular motifs on dark agate grounds — they are human-made compositions applied to the surface. The Chung dzi carries no etched element of any kind. It is also different from the Luk Mik ring beads (R-060626-LM, R-060626-LM2), which carry natural concentric ring patterns but are set in silver jewellery settings. The Chung dzi stands alone as the only bead in the collection whose entire visual character is produced by the geology of the stone.

The Chung Dzi (措思天珠 / Cuòsī Tiānzhū)

In Tibetan and Himalayan tradition, the Chung dzi holds a status unlike any etched bead. Because its pattern is produced by nature rather than craftsmanship, it is understood as a direct gift — a stone that formed itself into the pattern without human guidance, and that carries within it the undivided energy of the earth it came from. The term 措思 (Cuòsī) in Tibetan translates approximately as "natural" or "self-formed," and the 天珠 (Tiānzhū) designation — Heaven Bead — places it within the broader dzi family. Tibetan practitioners have long valued the Chung dzi for its purity: a bead that was not worked, not decorated, not altered — that simply revealed itself through polishing. The dark band at the centre is understood as the concentrated essence of the stone; the pale zones flanking it are read as the opening, the space around that concentration, the breath on either side of the held note. Together they form the simplest and, in this tradition, one of the most complete expressions the dzi form can offer.
