The Double Heaven & Earth motif carries two compositions on a single barrel, and on this bead they read in genuine contrast. The primary face shows a sequence of gate forms — structured rectangular frames with vertical internal bars, the classic heaven gate element that defines this motif. Rotate the bead 180° and those same design elements resolve into arch forms and curved earth lines — the same etching, read from a different axis, producing a different scene entirely. The white lines that make the gate on one face make the arch on the other. It is a compositional relationship built into the motif itself, and this bead carries it clearly in high-contrast bright white against very dark brown.

The ground is very dark brown agate, confirmed from flat-lit white-background photos — a deep, rich tone that stops short of pitch-black, carrying a warmth particularly visible at the drill ends where the stone opens into a warm honey-brown. The etched motif lines are stark bright white, bold and opaque, giving this piece a higher contrast ratio than many beads of comparable age. The form is compact fusiform at 40.9×11.1mm — shorter and proportionally wider than the elongated pieces, sitting comfortably in the hand.

The surface is high-gloss throughout. Minor age-consistent micro-pitting is visible in the dark zones of the body — very small natural surface marks distributed across the ground, consistent with two to three centuries of age, disclosed here in full. No cracks and no chips are visible in any photo. I independently confirm both.

The Double Heaven & Earth Motif

The Heaven & Earth dzi (天地天珠) is one of the foundational motifs in the Tibetan dzi tradition. The Heaven Gate (天門) element — a framed rectangular structure — represents the passage between the human realm and the celestial, the threshold through which blessings descend. The Earth Gate (地門) element — the arch or curved lower form — grounds the bead in the earthly realm, completing the vertical axis of existence. Together they represent the full span of being, from the terrestrial to the divine.
