One Eye & Yungdrung Motif, 41.2×12.7mm, Pitch-Black Agate (At-072326-1ESWBS)

🪨 Genuine agate. Unretouched photos. What you see is what ships.

This bead carries two motifs on opposite faces — and they could not be more different in form. One face holds a single concentric eye. The other holds a yungdrung. Rotate from one to the other and the bead moves from the symbol of perception to the symbol of eternity.

The eye sits on its primary face: a pitch-black pupil at the centre, enclosed by a warm cream ring that traces a full oval around it, set against the pitch-black ground. Two vertical cream stripe separators flank the eye zone, defining the face. Rotate the bead 180° and the yungdrung appears — the four-armed rotating symbol etched in bold cream and peach-cream lines across the full width of the face, its arms turning in the angular interlocking pattern that has carried the same meaning across Tibet for more than two thousand years. Between these two faces, the transitional angles show the forms in partial view — arc of the eye ring at one turn, upper register of the yungdrung at the other — so that the rotation from eye to eternity symbol passes through a series of fragmentary readings before each motif resolves into clarity.

The macro photographs reveal the bloodspot character of this bead. The cinnabar inclusions (硃砂, zhusha — mercuric sulfide) are not scattered as pinpoints here but run as continuous warm orange-red streaks along the inner edges of the motif lines — tracing the border between the cream ring of the eye and its black pupil, and following the edges of the swastika arms across the opposite face. The bloodspot pattern on this bead is boundary-concentrated along motif line edges: the cinnabar has settled and concentrated precisely at the interface between the etched cream zones and the dark ground, making the motif lines themselves appear to glow with a reddish warmth under close examination.

Condition is good for a piece of this age. Fine age-consistent surface micro-texture is present across the black zones — visible under macro, consistent with centuries of wear and handling. No cracks or chips observed.

The One Eye & Yungdrung (གཡུང་དྲུང་) Motif

The single eye dzi is one of the most fundamental forms in the Tibetan tradition — a single circle of awareness, understood as the eye of wisdom or the eye of Dharmakaya, the all-perceiving ground of being. The yungdrung is the central sacred symbol of the Bön tradition — the swastika in its original, ancient form, predating its 20th-century appropriation by several millennia and carrying no association with it whatsoever. In Tibetan and Bön cosmology the yungdrung represents that which is eternal, self-arising, and unchanging — the indestructible ground beneath all phenomena. Together on a single bead, the eye and the yungdrung pair perception with permanence: the eye that sees, and the ground that never changes. Beads combining these two symbols are considered especially powerful in the Bön tradition, uniting the seeing capacity of wisdom with the stability of the eternal.
