Ancient One Eye & Mountain Motif Dzi Bead with Bloodspots (Anc-0426-1EMt)

The mountain motif is one of the most ancient and least common of all dzi configurations — and this bead carries both. One side presents the classic single eye, its white oval ring and dark centre looking outward with the quiet authority of something made to be worn close to the body for a lifetime. Turn it over and the mountain motif appears: the paired arch forms that have represented elevation, sanctuary, and spiritual protection across Himalayan and Central Asian traditions for over two millennia.
This is an ancient dzi bead estimated at 1,500 to 2,000 years old. The evidence is written directly into the surface. Under macro photography, the entire body of this bead shows dense micro-crystalline pitting — a transformation of the agate matrix that occurs only through extreme age and cannot be faked or accelerated. The white zones are no longer bright; they have settled into the warm, muted cream that comes from centuries of mineral exchange. The dark ground has deepened to an almost black-brown, rich and fully saturated.
What makes this piece exceptional beyond its dual motif is the presence of genuine iron-oxide bloodspots. These are visible in the macro photographs as warm red-brown pooling — within the eye ring itself, bleeding into the white stripe zones, and settling in the micro-pitting of the dark field. Bloodspot dzi are prized across Tibetan, Chinese, and Southeast Asian collecting traditions as carrying intensified protective and auspicious energy. You can browse more pieces from this rare category in the bloodspot dzi collection.
The bead is torpedo-shaped with a slightly asymmetric taper — wider at one end, narrowing toward the drill tip. This natural asymmetry is itself a mark of hand-worked antiquity. Both drill holes are intact and aged. The surface along the ridge line shows the kind of fine micro-abrasion that accumulates only from decades of cord wear against living skin. The patina is seamless and unbroken across the entire surface.
Bead details: Motif: One Eye & Mountain (山形一眼) Age estimate: 1,500–2,000 years Bloodspots: Present — confirmed iron-oxide, visible in macro Surface condition: Micro-crystalline aging throughout; patina intact Drill holes: Both ends intact, aged Product ID: Anc-0426-1EMt
A one eye dzi is traditionally associated with clarity of vision, focus, and the removal of obstacles. The mountain motif adds a layer of meaning rooted in elevation and protection — the mountain as the stable ground beneath spiritual practice. Together on a single bead, they represent a combination rarely encountered in the market.
This bead has been photographed from all angles and under macro magnification so you can assess every detail of the surface, motif, patina, and bloodspot placement before purchasing. Nothing has been altered, enhanced, or staged.
