Antique Tibetan Green Tara Dzi Bead with Bloodspots & Natural Striations | 200+ Years Old

Every antique dzi bead is unique. But some beads carry a character so distinct that they demand to be described in their own terms — not simply as an example of a type, but as an individual object with its own geological story written into its surface. This is one of those beads.

This is a genuine antique Tibetan Green Tara Dzi Bead, estimated at over 200 years old, measuring 39.9mm × 11.7mm. It carries two remarkable natural features beyond the motif itself: fine natural cinnabar bloodspot specks distributed across the agate field, and rare warm amber and orange striations running through the white zones — the natural banding of the agate itself, unchanged since this stone formed in the earth. No other bead in the world has this exact combination of markings. This one is unrepeatable.

What You Are Buying

One (1) single antique Green Tara Dzi bead. Natural agate. Genuine age. Every feature visible in these photographs — the Tara motif, the bloodspot specks, the amber striations — is completely natural and unaltered. Exact dimensions: 39.9mm × 11.7mm.

The Green Tara Motif: Meaning and Symbolism

Green Tara — known in Tibetan as སྒྲོལ་མ་ (Sgrol-ma), meaning she who liberates — is among the most widely venerated figures in Tibetan Buddhism. She is the swift protectress, the mother of all Buddhas, the bodhisattva who acts without hesitation the moment she is called upon. Her name itself means she who ferries across — carrying beings over the ocean of suffering, fear, and obstruction to the shore of liberation.

Where other protectors deliberate, Tara moves. This is her defining quality and the reason she has been invoked by Tibetan practitioners for over a thousand years — in times of danger, at moments of decision, in the face of obstacles that seem immovable.

The Green Tara Dzi carries her energy in concentrated, physical form. This motif is believed to bring:

  • Swift and decisive protection — Tara acts immediately; danger is addressed before it fully arrives
  • Liberation from the eight fears — lions, elephants, fire, snakes, thieves, water, imprisonment, and evil spirits; Tara is specifically invoked against all eight
  • Obstacle removal — what blocks your path dissolves in her presence
  • Success in all endeavors — her active, forward-moving energy supports completion and achievement
  • Compassionate wisdom — warm, immediate, and personally accessible in a way practitioners across centuries have found uniquely comforting
  • New beginnings and growth — Green Tara is associated with spring, fertility, and the energy of things coming into being

The Two Natural Features That Make This Bead Singular

Cinnabar Bloodspot Specks Fine natural cinnabar specks are distributed across the white agate field of this bead. Known in Chinese as 硃砂 (Zhūshā), these inclusions form when mercury and sulfur are present during the agate's geological formation, producing mercuric sulfide — cinnabar — embedded permanently in the stone. In its purest form, cinnabar is the same mineral historically used to produce vermilion, one of the most sacred pigments in Buddhist art. In Tibetan collecting tradition, bloodspot inclusions are considered highly auspicious — signs of a bead with exceptional vitality and accumulated spiritual energy.

Natural Amber Striations Equally remarkable are the warm amber and orange striations running through the white zones of this bead's agate. These are the natural banding lines of the stone itself — formed over millions of years as mineral-rich water moved through the agate during its crystallization. No two agate stones band identically. These striations are this bead's geological fingerprint, and they give it a warmth and depth of color that photographs capture but cannot fully convey in person.

Together these two features — bloodspot specks and amber striations — make this bead not just a Green Tara Dzi, but a Green Tara Dzi that could only ever be this specific bead.

The Two Faces of This Bead

Side A carries the Green Tara motif — the flowing, curvilinear symbol with its characteristic hook and curl, immediately recognizable to collectors and practitioners alike. Side B carries a complementary wave and cloud pattern, a natural result of how the bead was etched across its full circumference. Both faces are shown in full detail in the photographs above.
