Vintage Two Eye Motif Dzi Bead, Taiwan, 32.7×11.7mm (V-062126-2E)

The two eyes on this bead face in opposite directions — and neither face looks quite like the other.

This is a genuine vintage dzi bead from Taiwan, crafted in the 1980s or 1990s. It is not a new bead and not an antique — it sits in the decades between, carrying real age without belonging to either extreme. The Two Eye motif appears on two opposite faces, each eye rendered as a closed concentric ring with a C-curve connector sweeping into the ring from one side — but the two faces are not mirror images. One carries a tighter, more clearly resolved eye with a distinct inner pupil; the other opens into a broader, slightly more gestural form. The same motif, read two different ways depending on which face you're looking at.

The ground is a warm dark brown, the motif lines a cool pale grey-white — notably different from the honey-gold tones of the V-FA Large Keyhole pieces, and also different from the warm cream of the antique Two Eye pieces in the collection. The end caps are a distinct pale grey-white, visibly lighter than the ground, with the banded agate structure showing through at both tips. Image 6 and 7 show both drill holes clearly: small, single, slightly off-centre openings set within the pale end-cap banding — a different drilling style from the Large Keyhole pieces entirely.

No cracks or chips are visible in any of the six photographs. Surface has a semi-matte quality across the body, consistent with the bead's age and use.

The Two Eye Motif

In Tibetan dzi tradition, the Two Eye motif is associated with harmony — in close relationships and shared environments, between partners and among colleagues. It is one of the most personal of the eye-count motifs, its pairing read as a balance between two presences rather than a multiplication of the same force.
