On this bead the eye does not end where the ring ends — the arc above each eye curls outward and flows directly into the wave lines of the adjacent connector face, so that the composition never quite stops. Each eye bleeds into the movement around it, the cream lines of the motif reading as one continuous sweeping form rather than a series of distinct elements. Hold the bead at one angle and you see an eye. Rotate it and the eye becomes part of a wave. Rotate further and the second eye appears, pulling the wave back into its orbit.

This 1980s Taiwan dzi carries two eyes distributed one per face, each framed by generous cream rings with that characteristic open, partially resolved arc — not the crisp closed concentric of a standard two-eye, but something looser and more fluid. Between the eye faces, the connector zones carry bold diagonal wave bands: two sweeping S-curves that move across the dark ground in the same generous, unhurried stroke as the tasso dzi family. The combination of eye motif and wave connector is the defining character of this variant — and on a piece with these dimensions and this cream-to-dark contrast, it is a composition that holds attention at every angle.

The ground throughout is a deep, warm dark brown — confirmed from all four flat-lit white-background photographs. The cream motif lines are bright and bold, the contrast between them and the dark ground clean and well-maintained across four decades of the bead's life. Both drill ends show a warm tan-beige agate-internal tone at the tips.

The two macro photographs document cinnabar bloodspots (硃砂, zhusha — mercuric sulfide) distributed throughout the cream zones. In image 7, reddish-orange to warm brown cinnabar dots are visible across the cream eye ring and the adjacent cream stripe zone, with a concentrated reddish-brown fringe running along the boundary between the cream and dark ground. In image 8, scattered reddish-orange pinpoints appear across the cream wave band of the connector face. The bloodspot distribution is cream-zone focused scattered with boundary-concentrated cinnabar — a pattern that holds across both the eye face and the connector face, making this a bead whose character runs deeper than its surface.

The Two Eye (གཞུང་མིག) Motif

The two-eye dzi is one of the most widely worn and deeply symbolic beads in the Tibetan tradition. Each eye is understood as a watchful presence — protective, perceptive, and stabilising. In Tibetan Buddhist and Bön contexts, the two eyes together are associated with the paired qualities of wisdom and compassion, and with balance between inner and outer life. The variant form — where the eye ring flows into the surrounding wave or connector elements rather than sitting as a self-contained concentric circle — carries the same symbolic meaning within a visual vocabulary that is more dynamic and continuous. This bead was crafted in Taiwan in the 1980s in the living tradition of dzi production, carrying the full weight of the motif in a piece intended for daily wear and practice. It is not a genuine antique, but it is a piece with its own four decades of history and genuine cinnabar bloodspot character that can only develop over time.
