This bead distributes its five eyes across two long faces in an uneven arrangement that gives each face its own distinct character. One face carries three eyes in a horizontal row — three cream-white rings with dark centers, their upper edges connected by a continuous undulating wave line that runs the full length of the face above them, and a second wave line below. The eyes are not isolated: they are held together within this wave network, the connecting lines moving between and around them in a composition that reads as a unified field rather than three separate elements. The other long face carries two eyes, framed within a rectangular cream-white border whose top and bottom edges are themselves wavy — the straight verticals of the frame meeting the undulating horizontals to create a contained panel, the two eyes sitting within it side by side. The overall composition alternates around the bead: eye face, wave face, eye face, wave face — the two wave faces carrying the same three-line undulating composition, each slightly different in the exact path of the cream lines.

The wave faces are worth describing on their own terms. Three cream-white lines run horizontally across each, their edges undulating in a continuous scalloped pattern that creates two dark brown channels between them. The lines are not mechanical — the crests and troughs of each wave vary in height and spacing, the craftsman's hand evident in the rhythmic but irregular movement of the cream across the dark ground. At distance these faces read as bold horizontal banding; close up the wave character asserts itself.

The ground throughout is a deep dark brown — a genuine warm brown that is consistent across all four faces, with no abrupt transition between the eye faces and the wave faces. The cream-white motif lines are well-defined and intact throughout, with no erosion or degradation. At both drill ends the agate opens into a warm grey-brown — slightly cooler and lighter than the body brown — the natural end cap zone visible in both angled end photographs. Both drill holes are small and clean with no rim damage. Surface condition is excellent. No cracks or chips are present on any face.

The Five-Eye Dzi

Five is associated in Tibetan Buddhist cosmology with the five Dhyani Buddhas — the five celestial buddhas who embody the five aspects of enlightened wisdom — and with the five directions: the four cardinal points plus the centre. A five-eye dzi is traditionally understood to invoke the blessings of all five Dhyani Buddhas simultaneously, bringing together their five wisdoms into a single object. The bead is held to confer good fortune, eliminate the five poisons of the mind, and create conditions for the wearer's spiritual development. The wave connector motif on this bead — linking the eyes and forming the alternating faces — adds a further dimension: in Tibetan dzi tradition, wave and water forms carry associations with continuity, the flow of merit, and the dissolving of obstacles.
