Ancient Seven Stripe Chung Dzi, 59.7×16.9mm, warm brown ground, diagonal crossing stripes (Ac-031322-7SChung)

We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

At 16.9mm in diameter, this is one of the widest Chung dzi in the collection, and the photographs show that width held across almost the full 59.7mm length.

Most fusiform beads taper steadily from their widest point toward both ends. This bead does not. It holds its 16.9mm diameter across most of its body, tapering only close to the tips, so it reads as a substantial cylinder rather than a pointed oval. It is, as the photographs show, a big bead, heavy and substantial in the hand.

The ground is a warm, rich brown natural agate, not dark, not grey, not pitch-black, with natural banding moving through it: darker chocolate-brown zones beside lighter honey-brown ones, the banding visible as internal flow lines within the semi-translucent agate. The ground colour varies across the four faces: Face C (Image 4) shows a much lighter sandy warm brown, while Faces A and D (Images 2 and 5) show the deeper chocolate-brown. No two faces read the same.

The seven cream-white stripe bands do something few Chung dzi stripes do: they lean. Rather than running in strict parallels, they tilt diagonally across the body, and on some faces (Image 4 most clearly) they appear to cross, forming X-intersections. That gives the pattern a dynamic, flowing quality quite unlike rigid parallel bands. The stripes carry the rough, granular texture of aged ancient etching, weathered and slightly irregular after six to eight centuries.

The end caps (Images 6 and 7) show the warm honey-brown agate at the tips; both drill holes are small and centred, with warm reddish-brown channels. The body has a satin to semi-gloss finish, with fine natural texture and micro-pitting across the ground consistent with its age.

This bead stands apart in our Chung dzi for its warm ground, its width, and its diagonal crossing stripes. Compare the grey-black seven stripe and the flattened seven stripe with bloodspots.

The Seven Stripe Chung Dzi (瓊珠七線紋)

The Chung dzi is the striped category of the dzi tradition. The stripe is the continuous line that does not end, associated with protection, steady prosperity, and success that builds without interruption. Seven is a meaningful number in Tibetan and Buddhist tradition (seven offerings on the altar, the seven steps of the newborn Buddha), but the meaning of a Chung dzi comes from the stripe itself, not the number of stripes. A seven stripe bead is no more powerful than a single stripe one. Choose the Chung dzi whose look feels balanced and pleasing to you. Read more in Chung Dzi: The Complete Guide to Striped Dzi Beads.
