The end caps on this bead glow.
Most dzi in this family read as two colours — dark ground, cream motif. This one reads as three. The central body is pitch-black. The cream eye rings and stripe separators cut through it cleanly. And then, at each drill end, the agate opens into a warm, translucent honey-olive tone — luminous and distinctly golden — that has nothing in common with the black zone it borders. The contrast registers immediately. From any angle, the end caps read as part of a different stone, and the bead's composition pivots around that opposition.
The five eyes are distributed two on one face and three on the other — the standard five-eye count in an asymmetric split, each eye a cream-white ring with a dark brown centre, sized consistently and cleanly formed. The connector zones between the eye faces are plain: vertical cream stripe separators against the pitch-black ground, without the elaborate wave banding seen on some pieces in this family. The motif is kept spare, and that sparseness puts more visual weight on the end caps and the eyes themselves. Nothing competes with either.
At 59.6mm this is the longer piece of the two five-eye beads in this production run. The form is fusiform — tapering evenly from a wide centre to both drill ends, the taper accentuating the transition into the honey end cap zones. Both drill holes are small and clean with no chipping at the rim. The surface is uniformly high-gloss. No cracks and no chips are visible in any photograph. I independently confirm both.
The Five Eye Motif
The five eye dzi (五眼天珠) is among the most auspicious eye-count forms in the Tibetan dzi tradition. Five eyes correspond to the Five Dhyani Buddhas — Vairocana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha, and Amoghasiddhi — the five aspects of awakened mind that together represent the complete transformation of the five aggregates into wisdom. The five-eye bead is also associated with the five directions, extending protection across all of space. Wearing a five-eye dzi is understood to invite the blessings of all five buddha families simultaneously and to support the movement toward full realisation of awakened mind.
