The nine eyes on this bead are connected — by a cream grid that runs between them from one end of the barrel to the other.

On most nine-eye dzi, the eyes are the whole story. On this bead, the connector lines between them are equally present — a stepped cream grid linking each eye to its neighbours, forming a continuous maze-like lattice that spans the full length of the barrel. The nine eyes sit within this framework rather than floating independently against the ground, and the effect is a more structured, architectural composition than the simple eye-on-ground arrangement typical of the motif. The warm dark brown ground reads consistently from end to end, the cream grid lines standing out against it with quiet confidence.

Each of the nine eyes follows the classic concentric ring construction: a dark brown pupil enclosed in a warm cream iris, bounded by the squared frame lines of the surrounding grid. The cream is a warm aged tan throughout — settled and softened over the bead's estimated 200–400 years rather than remaining the cooler cream-white of a newer piece. The overall tone of the bead is warm and unified: dark brown ground, warm cream motif, warm dark brown drill ends all drawn from the same natural agate palette with no zone shifts or colour breaks.

At 54.0mm this is a full-sized antique nine-eye barrel with excellent proportions — the fusiform profile tapers gradually toward both drill ends without sharpening into a point, giving the bead a comfortable, balanced weight in hand. The surface carries a smooth, well-settled patina. Fine surface micro-texture is present in the cream zones and along the grid lines under close inspection, consistent with aged etching on agate. No cracks are present; confirmed independently from photos.
