Two medicine digs. Two different eyes. One pitch-black stone.
The two eyes on this bead are not the same as each other. Face A presents a fully resolved concentric ring — outer oval, cream field, dark pupil, the motif complete and contained. Face B presents a C-ring: the outer arc does not close, the eye reads as open, the ring still in the process of completing a circle it never finishes. On the four other two eye beads in this collection, the two eyes share a characteristic — both open (At-052526-2E2), both fully closed (At-010726-2E3), both open but differently (At-082624-2E). This bead is the only one in the collection where the two eyes are fundamentally different from each other: one closed, one open, each on its own face.
The medicine digs sit on a third face — the reverse, visible in Image 2 — where the cream motif takes the form of a scroll or wave rather than an eye. Two deliberate excavations are visible there, irregular in shape, the agate surface physically removed where previous keepers scraped powdered stone from the bead to create healing preparations in the Tibetan medical tradition. The digs interrupt the cream scroll lines where they sit, which confirms they were made after the bead was complete — after the etching was done, after the motif was already resolved. Someone chose this specific face, this specific spot, and scraped. The bead had already been used as an amulet; it was then used as medicine. Two kinds of trust, recorded on the same stone.
The ground is pitch-black — deep, consistent, highly polished. This bead carries a noticeably smoother surface than other beads of comparable age in this collection, the agate's natural quality producing a high-gloss finish that catches light differently from the matte-surface aged beads. The end caps are pitch-black agate, the same unbroken dark tone as the body, with small drill holes set within a cream ring surround visible in Images 5 and 6.
Among the medicine dig beads in this collection, the comparison with At-010726-2E3 is direct and instructive. That bead is 38.6mm × 12.5mm on a warm dark brown ground with both eyes fully closed. This bead is 37.3mm × 12.8mm on a pitch-black ground with asymmetric eyes. Same provenance marker — medicine digs — different agate, different eye character, different reading at every point.
The Two Eye Motif is the motif of relational harmony — between partners, between colleagues, between households. It is worn where the intention is alignment between two people rather than amplification of a single individual's field. It is the bead most consistently associated with partnership, gifted at marriages, placed in workplaces where cooperation is the primary need.
This bead is estimated to be 200 or more years old. No cracks. No bloodspots. One bead. One owner.
