Antique Two Eye Dzi Bead with Medicine Digs, 37.3mm × 12.8mm, Pitch-Black Agate (At-033126-2E4)

Two medicine digs. Two different eyes. One pitch-black stone.

The two eyes on this bead do not match. Face A carries a fully closed concentric eye — outer oval, cream field, dark pupil, complete and contained. Face B carries a C-ring: the outer arc never closes, so the eye reads as open. One closed eye and one open eye on the same bead is an unusual pairing.

The medicine digs sit on a third face (Image 2), where the cream motif becomes a scroll or wave rather than an eye. Two deliberate, irregular hollows are visible there, where earlier keepers scraped powdered stone from the bead for traditional Tibetan medicine. The digs cut through the cream scroll lines, showing they were made after the bead was finished. Someone chose this face and this spot. The bead was first trusted as an amulet, then as medicine — two kinds of trust recorded on one stone.

The ground is a deep, even pitch-black and highly polished, smoother and glossier than many beads of similar age. The end caps are the same unbroken black, with small drill holes set within a cream ring (Images 5 and 6).

Compared with the Antique Two Eye Dzi At-010726-2E3 — 38.6mm × 12.5mm, warm dark brown, both eyes closed — this bead shares the medicine digs but differs in stone, colour and eye character.

The Two Eye Motif

The Two Eye dzi (二眼天珠) is the motif of harmony between people — partners, colleagues, households. It is worn when the intention is alignment between two people rather than strengthening one person alone, and is often given at marriages or kept in workplaces where cooperation matters most.
