Both eyes on this bead are fully closed, and the end caps that frame them are the colour of dry sand.

That contrast — deep warm brown body, sandy-cream ends — is the first thing you notice in the hand. Then come the two eyes: not open C-rings, but fully closed concentric forms, each with an outer ring, an inner ring and a solid dark pupil. Both faces carry the same complete, resolved eye.

The bead measures 28.4mm × 13.0mm, an ovoid shape that is widest in the middle and tapers smoothly to each end — a classic antique dzi proportion, polished smooth by generations of wear. The ground is a deep warm brown, close to black, with a mahogany undertone visible at the curved edges where light passes into the stone. The motif lines are a warm sandy cream that matches the end caps.

The two connecting faces carry flowing, wave-like cream lines — loose, organic curves rather than rigid stripes. Each of these faces also holds a medicine dig: a distinct recessed hollow with darker edges, worn smooth with the same patina as the surrounding stone.

Medicine digs are small amounts of stone deliberately scraped from a dzi by healers or keepers, who ground the powder into traditional Tibetan medicine, often with gold, silver, pearl and consecrated herbs. One dig shows a bead that was trusted, not just worn. Two digs, on opposite faces, mean it was used for medicine at least twice — by one keeper at different times, or by successive owners who inherited both the bead and their faith in it.

Among our two eye beads, this is the most compact with both eyes fully closed, and the only one with sandy-cream end caps against a deep brown body. The Antique Two Eye Dzi At-010726-2E3 also has two closed eyes and two medicine digs, but is longer and more cylindrical.

The Two Eye Motif

The Two Eye dzi (二眼天珠) is one of the most cherished motifs in the dzi tradition. Its two eyes represent balance: two partners, two forces, two sides of the self in harmony. It is the bead of harmony at home — said to strengthen the bond between partners, bring peace to the household and foster understanding across generations — and of harmony at work, a long-standing favourite of managers, teachers, mediators and team leaders. With both eyes fully closed, the design reads as complete and whole.
