Both eyes on this bead are fully closed — and the end caps that bracket them are the colour of dry sand.

That contrast — deep warm dark-brown body, sandy-cream end caps — is the first thing you register when the bead is in hand. Then you see the two eyes: not open C-rings, not partial arcs, but fully closed concentric compositions, each built from an outer ring, an inner ring, and a solid dark pupil at the centre. Both faces carry the same resolved, complete form. Nothing here is opening or reaching — both eyes have arrived.

The bead measures 28.4mm × 13.0mm in an ovoid body form — wider at the mid-section and tapering smoothly toward each end cap. This olive or lens shape is a classic antique dzi proportion, and in this bead it is polished to a surface that reads as highly finished from generation after generation of wear. The ground colour is a deep warm dark-brown — not pitch-black, but approaching it, with a mahogany undertone that becomes visible at the curved edges and lower body where light catches the agate's depth. The motif lines are a warm sandy cream, consistent with the end cap colour, giving the bead a chromatic coherence between the eye rings and the caps that frame them.

The two connector faces — the faces between the eyes, top and bottom — carry flowing, wave-like cream lines across the dark ground. At-033126-2E4, from the same date period, is 37.3mm × 12.8mm with one closed eye and one open C-ring. This bead — 28.4mm × 13.0mm, both eyes fully closed, ovoid form, cream end caps — is the most compact fully-closed two-eye in the collection, and the only one with cream-beige end caps contrasting against a warm dark-brown body.

The Two Eye (雙眼 / 二眼) Motif

The Two Eye dzi — mig nyis in Tibetan — is among the most revered motifs in the dzi tradition. Its two eyes represent duality held in perfect equilibrium: two partners, two forces, two aspects of the self. In Tibetan Buddhist understanding, the two eyes also evoke the compassionate dual gaze of Chenrezig (Avalokiteśvara), the bodhisattva who sees suffering in all directions simultaneously. This is the bead of harmony at home: it is said to strengthen the bond between partners, bring peace to shared spaces, and foster understanding across generations within a family. It is equally the bead of harmony at work: a sustained favourite among those whose effectiveness depends on cooperation — managers, teachers, mediators, team leaders.
