Antique Wave & Stripe Dzi, three waves, four stripes, 36.8mm × 11.7mm, chocolate-brown agate (At-053126-WS2)
We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.
The stripe lines on this bead are not straight — and that is the entire point.
Look at the motif lines in the photographs: each pale grey-cream band has a lateral undulation as it crosses the body, a gentle sideways curve that keeps the eye moving. These are not ruled lines. They are waves. The wave and the stripe are operating simultaneously in every single mark — each line is both boundary and motion, both structure and rhythm. That duality is not a stylistic choice. It is the logic of the motif.
The bead measures 36.8mm × 11.7mm in a pronounced elongated spindle form — slim and sharply tapered at both ends, with a full rounded mid-section that gives it a lens-like silhouette when laid flat. This form sits between the compact disc proportion of some antique dzi and the long cylindrical barrel of others: a classical spindle, widest exactly at centre, symmetrical in its tapering. The body is a deep, cool-toned chocolate-brown — darker than mahogany, distinctly short of pitch-black, with a neutral depth that reads as dark espresso in direct light. The motif lines are a muted pale grey-cream, closer to cool grey-white than sandy cream, running in three wave-undulating bands across the body and creating four dark stripe zones between them. Both end caps share the same deep chocolate-brown as the body — there is no colour contrast at the tips, the bead reads as one continuous dark field interrupted only by its grey-cream wave lines.
The surface carries two distinct finish qualities visible across the four photographs. The upper ridge and mid-body show a glassy polish with a strong specular highlight — the zones that received the most contact during centuries of wear. The lower body and end faces show a matte-to-semi-gloss finish with fine surface micro-pitting: the characteristic texture of agate that has weathered naturally over two to three centuries without intervention. These two finishes coexisting on a single bead confirm directional wear — this bead was hung or worn consistently, and its surface remembers the orientation. There are no cracks. The weathering marks visible in the photographs are not flaws. They are provenance.
The photographs also reveal a small number of warm rust-orange natural inclusions within the agate matrix, visible particularly in Image 2 and at the shoulder zones in Images 3 and 4. These are minor cinnabar (硃砂/zhūshā) inclusions — present within the stone, but not prominent or concentrated enough to classify this as a bloodspot dzi. They are noted here for accuracy and full transparency, consistent with our unretouched photography policy.
Within the collection's wave family, this bead differs from At-052526-DW3 (Double Wave, honey-brown, 48.7mm × 11.6mm) and At-052526-DW4 (Double Wave, cream-brown, 47.4mm × 11.4mm) in both motif logic and scale: the double wave is a self-contained closed loop, a motif that curves back on itself, while this bead's wave-and-stripe system is linear and directional — it moves across the body from end to end without returning. The compact At-072325-DW5 (28.4mm × 10.6mm) sits at the opposite end of the scale. The registered At-052526-WS (40.3mm × 11.3mm) carries the same combined motif but is longer and narrower; this bead is proportionally fuller in its mid-section and slightly cooler in its ground colour.
The Wave & Stripe (波紋條紋) Motif
The Wave motif in the Tibetan dzi tradition is associated with continuous forward momentum — the force that carries merit and good fortune outward into the wearer's circumstances without interruption. A bead bearing waves is understood to sustain endeavours that require persistence: it does not generate a single surge of fortune but maintains a steady, unceasing current. The Stripe motif compounds this: stripes in dzi tradition represent the accumulation and ordering of abundance — prosperity that is not scattered but directed and retained. Together, wave and stripe form the combination most historically associated with commercial success and professional momentum. Merchants, traders, and those in sustained competitive endeavour across the Himalayan world have long favoured this pairing. The wave ensures flow. The stripe ensures that what flows is kept.
