Natural One Eye Dzi, 44.4×14.6mm, dark brown-black faceted banded agate (N-N-071126-1E-FCT)

The eye on this bead fills most of the face it sits on — and the face itself is flat, not curved, because this bead was not formed with a round cross-section.

That is the first thing to understand. Images 2 and 4 show it clearly: the body has distinct flat faces meeting at angular edges, giving a rhombus or diamond cross-section when the bead is viewed from the end. This is not a barrel, not a cigar, not an olive. The form is a faceted fusiform — elongated and tapered at both ends, but with flat planes rather than a continuous curve. Each flat face presents a different reading of the stone's internal banding, and the eye — the naturally formed one eye motif — occupies one of these faces almost in its entirety.

Image 1 shows that face. The eye's structure, from centre outward: a dark black pupil zone with a warm brown-cream natural inclusion at its core; a cream-white inner ring; a broad powder-blue band; a darker enclosing ring; and then the body's dense, closely-spaced banding radiating outward in alternating layers of dark brown-black, grey-brown, and lighter tones. The warm honey-brown that dominates both tapered ends is also visible at the left in image 1, confirming that the body carries two distinct colour zones — warm brown at each end, darker through the centre — with the eye sitting squarely within the darker central zone.

Image 3 shows the back face: no eye, warm brown and caramel banding dominant, rich in colour and markedly different in character from the eye face. A zone of fine surface micro-texture is visible in the centre of this face — disclosed. Images 2 and 4 show the two side faces, each carrying the body's banding in long horizontal sweeps, with partial arcs of the eye's outer banding visible at the edges. Neither side face carries the complete eye.

Both drill holes are visible in images 5 and 6, one at each tapered end. Each hole is small and clean. At both ends, a warm honey-brown to orange-brown natural agate inclusion sits adjacent to the drill hole — visible in both images, and confirmed as internal to the stone rather than surface damage.

The One Eye Motif

The one eye dzi carries one of the most enduring meanings in the Tibetan bead tradition — clarity of vision, the capacity to see through confusion, and a protective presence attributed to the single unblinking eye. On naturally formed pieces, where no craftsman placed the motif, the eye exists because the agate's internal structure produced it: layer by layer, over geological time, the banding converged into the form. Collectors who seek naturally formed dzi often prioritise the one eye above all other natural motif types, precisely because of how directly it produces the symbolic form from raw geological process.
