Natural One Eye Dzi, 41.5×15.3mm, deep dark brown-black banded agate (N-N-071126-1E-OLV3)

🌿 Ethically sourced. Unretouched photos. What you see is what you receive.

The banding on this bead does not form a circle — it converges into a point, building a diamond-shaped zone of grey, blue, cream, and translucent agate at the centre of one face, while the rest of the body holds a very deep dark brown-black that reads as close to obsidian as banded agate can.

Image 1 shows the primary face: the banding zone sits slightly off-centre toward the upper field of the bead, its inner core blue-grey and faintly translucent, enclosed by a pale grey-cream band, then by the convergence of the stone's natural layering. A warm olive-cream tone is visible at the upper edge of the zone — a natural inclusion colour within the agate, not an applied pigment. The surrounding body is deep dark brown-black, with faint parallel banding lines just visible through the polish. This is what the owner and the dzi tradition recognise as a naturally formed one eye motif: a distinct, enclosed zone that reads as a single, centred eye, regardless of the precise geometry the banding took to produce it.

Rotate the bead 90° and the eye disappears. Image 2 shows a broad V or chevron in its place — the same banding zone read from a different axis, now pointing downward rather than enclosing. Image 4 shows the reverse rotation: a partial angular arch at the bottom of the frame, the upper field almost entirely dark. Image 3 shows the back face: almost no banding visible, the surface reading as a uniformly very deep dark ground under high gloss. The eye exists on one face, and only one face, which is consistent with how this banding pattern sits within the stone.

The form is asymmetric. One end, visible in image 5, tapers to a sharper point and carries the drill hole there. The other end, visible in image 6, is more rounded and bulbous, with the second drill hole centred at its tip. Two faint linear surface marks are visible on the back face in image 3 — disclosed. No cracks or chips are present.

At 41.5×15.3mm, this is the longest of the three olive-form pieces in the collection. The deep dark ground, confirmed across multiple white-background photographs, is the most consistently dark of the three — the warm brown undertones appear at the ends and within the banding zone but do not lighten the main body significantly.

The One Eye Motif

The one eye dzi is among the most sought-after forms in the Tibetan and Himalayan bead tradition. Understood as the eye of clarity and protection, a single enclosed eye — whether etched by hand or formed by the stone itself — carries the full symbolic weight of the motif. On naturally formed pieces, where the stone produced the form without human intervention, the convergence of banding into this shape is understood by collectors as the rarest and most direct expression of the motif.

Its companion pieces — the natural olive-form series:

  • N-N-071026-1E-OLV — 34.7×17.5mm, very dark brown almost black ground, classic circular eye banding
  • N-N-071126-1E-OLV2 — 39.1×15.8mm, cool dark grey-brown ground, circular eye banding with strong blue-grey and banding contrast

This piece — N-N-071126-1E-OLV3 at 41.5×15.3mm — is the longest of the three and the darkest in ground tone. The banding zone takes an angular/diamond form rather than the concentric ring seen in the other two.
