Natural One Eye Dzi, 39.1×15.8mm, dark grey-brown banded agate (N-N-071026-1E-OLV2)
🌿 Ethically sourced. Unretouched photos. What you see is what you receive.
The eye on this bead was not placed by a craftsman — the stone grew it, band by band, over geological time, until a concentric ring of cream and white resolved itself into the form the dzi tradition recognises as its most fundamental motif.
That is what image 1 shows: a complete, naturally formed one eye motif sitting at the centre of an olive-shaped bead. The pupil is a dark blue-grey inclusion ringed by a cream-grey zone, then a bright white band, then the layered banding of the stone flowing outward in dark grey-brown waves. No acid. No etching. No applied pigment. The eye exists because the agate's internal structure produced it.
Rotate the bead 90° and the eye disappears entirely. Image 2 shows angular, chevron-like banding — the same stone now reading as pure pattern, with a single bright white line cutting diagonally across cooler grey tones. Image 4 shows the reverse rotation: broad, undulating banding with the warm brown zone of the right end dominant, the white bands lower and more horizontal. Image 3 shows the back face, where the eye is absent and the banding is subtle, the surface dark and smooth under its polish. This is the nature of an olive-form piece — what you see depends entirely on which face is presented.
The colour across the bead is not uniform. The dominant body tone, confirmed from flat-lit white-background photos, is a cool dark grey-brown, cooler in character than the prior olive-form piece in this collection. The banding layers include blue-grey, cream, white, and warm brown, with the warm brown concentrated toward the ends. A warm orange-brown natural inclusion is visible at one end near the drill hole in image 5 — this is internal to the agate, not a flaw. A small surface mark is visible near the centre of the back face in image 3, and a minor nick is visible at the upper-left edge in image 4. Both are disclosed.
The form is the olive — an elongated, pointed-oval shape distinct from any barrel or cigar form in the collection. The drill runs lengthwise through the stone, confirmed in image 6 where the hole is clearly visible at the tapered end. This is a naturally drilled piece, unshaped beyond the drilling, with the full organic geometry of the original stone intact.
The One Eye Motif
In Tibetan and Himalayan bead traditions, the one eye motif carries associations with clarity of vision, focus, and the protective gaze — a single, unblinking circle understood as the eye of wisdom. On naturally formed pieces, where no human hand created the motif, these associations take on an additional dimension: the eye exists not because someone made it, but because the material itself produced the form. Collectors who value the naturally formed category often single out single-eye pieces as among the most striking, because the coincidence of natural banding resolving into the symbolic form is the rarest possible outcome.

The two pieces share the same form and the same naturally formed eye motif, but differ in both dimensions and colour character: that piece reads warmer and darker overall; this one is cooler in tone, with more pronounced blue-grey and banding contrast.
