New Double Wave Motif Dzi Bead, 58.2 × 13.8mm, very dark brown agate fusiform (N-062226-DW2)

We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

The two ends of this bead taper differently — one trails away gradually, the other drops off more abruptly — and that asymmetry is entirely the stone's own.

This is an elongated fusiform agate dzi, 58.2mm in length and 13.8mm in diameter, with a very dark warm brown ground and a sandy-beige etched motif field that reads as warm and granular rather than bright or crisp. The surface finish is matte to semi-matte throughout — noticeably less glossy than many of the other new dzi in this collection — with the etched motif zones carrying a slightly chalky, fine-grained texture visible in all close photographs. Both drill holes are small and cleanly placed at the tapered tips, visible in Images 4 and 5.

The motif is a Double Wave composition: two wave or tiger tooth forms, one per main face, each occupying its own zone and separated at the centre of the bead by a vertical dark ground bar. The wave on each face is rendered as a large, sweeping open form — the dark ground curving in from the upper and lower edges to cut a broad sandy-cream field into the characteristic arc or V-chevron shape associated with both the wave and tiger tooth traditions. The existing listing notes, correctly, that these two motifs are closely related and can be difficult to distinguish on a given bead. On this piece, the forms are open and expansive rather than sharply pointed, reading more as rolling wave arcs than tight angular teeth — but the ambiguity is genuine and worth acknowledging. The motif reads differently depending on the face and the angle: Images 2 and 4 present the composition more symmetrically, while Images 3 and 5 show how the dark ground encroaches differently from above and below on the reverse face, giving the wave a slightly different silhouette.

The sandy-beige motif field is notably warm in tone — not white, not cream in the cooler sense, but a granular warm beige with a slight honey warmth visible in Images 3, 5, and 6 where the angled light picks up the texture of the etched surface. The ground is a very dark warm brown, confirmed from the flat-lit white-background shots — deep and consistent, with a slight warmth that prevents it from reading as black even in the darkest-lit images.

This bead is newly crafted within the last twenty years. It is not an antique or ancient bead.

No cracks or chips are visible in any photograph. Minor surface pits and small marks consistent with agate production and normal handling are present at close examination in Images 3, 5, and 6, none structural.

The Double Wave Motif

The Wave motif (波浪紋) in Tibetan dzi tradition is associated with continuous flow, momentum, and the generation of unceasing good fortune — the wave as an image of energy that does not stop, that carries what it touches forward without effort. Doubled across two faces, the motif frames the bead's central divider with a bilateral symmetry that reinforces this sense of ongoing, balanced movement. The wave and tiger tooth motifs share a visual language rooted in the curved, sweeping line — one emphasising the flow of water, the other the power of the predator — and their overlap in dzi iconography reflects the longstanding fluidity between protective and auspicious symbolism in this tradition. On this piece, the two faces carry the composition consistently, each presenting the same broad arc with the central dark bar as the axis between them.
