Ten eyes don't divide the way you'd expect — and on this bead, they never share a face equally.

A ten-eye dzi might be assumed to split five and five, one pair of faces carrying five eyes each. This one doesn't. The ten eyes arrange in a 3-2-3-2 pattern: two faces carry three eyes in a row, and the two faces between them carry two eyes flanked by bold V-shaped connector elements that point inward toward the pair. The result is that no two adjacent faces read the same way, and the bead changes character with every quarter turn — three eyes, then two with their chevron brackets, then three again, then two again.

The ground on this bead is not a single colour. The white-background photographs show it clearly: the end caps and the narrow dividing bands between eye groups are a deep dark warm brown, while the broader zones carrying the eyes open into a lighter, warmer medium brown where the agate's natural tone comes through the etching field. The motif lines are cream-white throughout, reading with high contrast against the darker zones and softening noticeably where the ground lightens on the two-eye faces — visible most clearly in Image 3. The surface is matte to semi-matte, with a soft chalky texture in the cream zones consistent with new dzi construction.

The form is an elongated fusiform with an asymmetric taper. Images 5 and 6 show this from each end: one end broader and more gradual in its taper, the other smaller and more abrupt, with the drill hole sitting within a darker surround at the narrower tip. The upper profile of the bead, visible in the flat-lit shots, is gently scalloped rather than straight — the body rises and dips slightly between eye groups, giving the bead a subtle ridge-and-valley quality along its length.

No cracks, chips, or surface damage are observed in any of the six photographs. This is an independent finding.

The Ten Eye Motif

The Ten Eye dzi (十眼天珠) occupies a distinct position in Tibetan dzi tradition. Ten carries associations with completeness across multiple Buddhist frameworks: the ten directions of space (the four cardinal, four intermediate, plus zenith and nadir), the ten perfections (波羅蜜/pāramitā) of the Bodhisattva path, and the ten powers attributed to the Buddha. A ten-eye bead is understood to extend protection and awareness into every dimension simultaneously — a bead that leaves no direction, no quality, and no aspect of experience unwatched. It is one of the rarer eye counts in the dzi tradition, less commonly encountered than nine or twelve, and carries its own specific field of meaning distinct from its neighbours in the sequence.
