Turn this bead 90 degrees and the diamond becomes a cross — and the cross becomes a diamond again at the next turn.

The double diamond eye-in-eye motif on this bead does not have a fixed orientation. On the faces shown in Images 2 and 4, two concentric diamond forms sit point-to-point in a vertical axis: an outer diamond framing an inner diamond, the inner diamond containing a deep dark carnelian pupil at its centre. The construction is precise and symmetrical — two nested angular forms, the relationship between outer and inner consistent across every face. But rotate the bead 90 degrees to the view shown in Images 3 and 5, and the same motif resolves into an X: the four corners of the two diamonds now radiating outward from a central meeting point, the directional reading completely transformed. The motif does not change — only the angle does. What changes is everything about how it reads.

This is the consequence of placing a diamond motif on a spherical bead. There is no fixed axis, no designated top or bottom, no face that presents the composition from a privileged angle. Every 45-degree turn produces a different silhouette from the same etching, and the bead rewards handling in a way that a barrel-form dzi cannot offer in the same degree.

The ground across this bead is warm sandy-cream to pale grey-beige, covered throughout by a fine, slightly matte surface crystallisation — a mineral process that occurs within the stone over centuries as the original gloss is replaced by a subtler, drier surface character. This crystallisation is one of the clearest age markers on the bead: it does not occur on new or recent pieces, and its consistent presence across every face in every photograph is a document of the bead's 700–1,000 year age estimate. The etching lines cut through this crystallised surface in warm orange-red to rust-brown tones, still legible and well-defined despite the centuries, the colour variation between the brighter orange and deeper rust zones reflecting natural differences in the carnelian's mineral content at different depths.

Images 6 and 7 show the drilling ends. Both end caps show a deep chocolate-brown to dark carnelian zone surrounding the drill hole — the natural colour of the carnelian at the poles of the bead, where the internal stone colour differs from the paler body. The drill holes are small and well-centred. The crystallisation visible on the body continues onto the end cap zones, consistent with age-related surface change rather than localised wear.

No cracks or chips are visible in any of the six photographs, confirmed as my own independent finding.

The Double Diamond Eye-In-Eye Motif

The diamond eye is understood in dzi scholarship as the precursor form to the circular eye motif that became standard in later dzi production — an older, more angular construction in which the protective eye was expressed as a pointed diamond rather than a round ring. The eye-in-eye construction nests two of these diamond forms concentrically, the inner eye reading as a focal point within the outer frame. On carnelian dzi of this age and construction, the double diamond eye-in-eye is among the rarest configurations — the combination of spherical form, concentric diamond construction, and age-consistent crystallisation placing this bead at a specific intersection of motif type, material, and age that has very few parallels in surviving collections. In Tibetan belief, the diamond eye motif carries the same protective and clarity-bestowing associations as the circular eye — but with the additional symbolic weight of the diamond form itself: precision, penetration, and the capacity to see through obstruction.
