The bat and the eye never appear on the same face.
Rotate this bead a quarter turn and the motif switches completely. On Face A: two bat wing forms sweep outward from the centre — bilateral cream curves, each with its own dark pupil, forming a double arch that reads as spread wings, as an infinity symbol, as something between a creature and a gesture. Rotate ninety degrees to Face B: a single fully resolved eye appears, concentric ring structure intact, cream field clean and circular, dark brown pupil centred. Rotate again to Face C: the bat returns, now reading from the reverse direction — the same double-arch seen from behind, the wings now reading as an upward M or a wave crest. Rotate to Face D: the second eye, this one more open than the first, a C-ring rather than a fully closed circle, less resolved and more immediate.
Four faces. Two motifs. Neither shares space with the other. The bat occupies its faces entirely; the eye occupies its faces entirely. This is a bead that does not compromise between its two symbolic registers — it alternates between them, fully committing to each in turn.
Image 7 shows what the primary eye looks like at macro scale. The concentric ring structure is clear at this distance — outer dark ring, broad white cream field, inner dark ring with rust-orange and brown cinnabar bloodspot material distributed throughout. The surface micro-texture of the agate is visible at this scale: the fine pitting and grain of genuinely aged stone, accumulated over the 200 to 300 years this bead has existed. The dark zones throughout this bead carry natural bloodspot inclusions — cinnabar formations embedded in the agate at the geological level, not surface features, not additions.
The body is a squat wide barrel: 28.8mm long, 12.0mm in diameter. The ground is a deep warm dark brown — not the chocolate warmth of the Tasso beads, not the pitch black of some others in this collection, but a consistent dark field with just enough warmth to make the cream motif lines read with depth rather than stark contrast. The end caps are a distinctive warm reddish-brown — visible in Images 5 and 6 — with small orange-toned drill holes that carry their own geological colour, consistent with the cinnabar presence throughout the stone.
The Bat Motif (蝠) operates through phonetic homophony: 蝠 (fú) shares its sound with 福, the character for blessing, fortune, and auspiciousness. Embedding a bat in agate is embedding a word — the visual form carries the sound carries the meaning. Two bats double the phonetic resonance. The Two Eye Motif brings relational harmony — between partners, between colleagues, across households. Together, on a single bead, they address two of the most consistently sought intentions in dzi practice: accumulated blessing and sustained relationship.
This is the only Double Bat & Two Eye bead in this collection. One bead. One owner.
