On a spherical bead there is no top face and no side face — the wave runs everywhere at once, and this pair proves it from four different angles.

The double wave motif on an elongated barrel dzi has a clear axis: the waves run around the circumference, and you can hold the bead with a defined up and down. On a near-spherical form like this pair, that axis dissolves. Photographed from the front (Images 1–3), the motif reads as two sinuous horizontal bands with a characteristic double-humped arch where they approach each other at centre. Photographed from the drill-hole end (Images 4–5), the same bands now curve around the pole, and the meeting point of the two waves — the diamond lozenge — becomes legible as a pointed angular form sitting just off-centre. Same motif, four different readings depending on orientation.

The ground on both beads is pitch-black — confirmed against white backgrounds across all five photographs. This distinguishes this pair immediately from V-060426-DWP, whose ground reads as deep dark chocolate-brown. Here the dark zones have genuine depth, absorbing light rather than reflecting it, with fine micro-crazing texture across the black surface consistent with vintage Taiwan production and time in use. The motif bands are a warm sandy-cream — not bright white, not cool ivory, but a soft off-white with a light honey undertone that warms perceptibly at the edges of each band where the dark ground bleeds through.

Both beads measure 20.4mm in length: one at 17.8mm diameter, one at 17.7mm. This near-identical sizing makes them an exceptionally well-matched pair — proportionally, they are as close to twins as two individually produced vintage dzi beads are likely to be. The V-060426-DWP pair showed a slightly larger size variance (20.2/20.3mm length, 17.6/17.3mm diameter). This pair's matching length and near-identical diameter give it a visual symmetry that reads clearly when both beads are displayed together.

From the end-face views (Images 4–5), the drill holes are small, cleanly centred, and show no fraying or chipping at the opening. The black cap zone — the treated field that covers the poles of each bead — is clearly visible as a full dark area surrounding each drill hole, with the cream wave band curving away from it as a receding arc. In Image 5, the lozenge resolves slightly differently on each bead: on the left, the diamond point is more defined; on the right, it opens into a slightly broader form. This minor variation, invisible when the beads are worn together, is the natural result of hand-applied motif work and is part of what distinguishes authentic vintage production from mechanical reproduction.

The Double Wave Motif

The double wave (雙波紋, shuāng bō wén) in Tibetan dzi tradition symbolises the continuous, self-renewing flow of positive energy and fortune. Two waves meeting and forming a central lozenge represent the union of dualities — heaven and earth, motion and rest, giving and receiving — resolved into a single balanced point. Worn as a pair, double wave dzi beads are considered particularly auspicious in Tibetan and Chinese folk belief, as the pairing doubles the symbolic resonance of the motif itself: two waves, two beads, one continuous flow.
