Four Eye Motif Dzi Bead, 58.5×13.9mm, Medium-Dark Warm Brown (N-062426-4E)

All photographs on this page are unretouched. What you see is what you receive.

The two eyes on one face of this bead are not the same — and when you turn it over, the other face isn't the same as either of them.

Most four eye dzi resolve into two matched pairs, one pair per face, mirror-image across the body. This one doesn't. Face A carries two eyes with distinctly different constructions: one is an open C-ring frame with a loose spiral interior, the other a conventional closed ring with a clear round pupil. Turn the bead over to Face B and both eyes close into full rings — prominent, bold, and nearly matched — with a connecting element joining them at their inner edges. Same motif, same count, two entirely different visual languages depending on which face is forward.

The bead is a pronounced fusiform — long and tapered at both ends, with an asymmetry to the taper that the angled shots in Images 3 and 4 make clear. One end rounds off gradually; the other drops away more abruptly to a tighter point where the drill hole sits. The ground is a medium-dark warm brown, confirmed from white-background photography — warmer and lighter than the very deep dark warm brown of the N-062226-DW3 or N-062226-9E2, with a chocolate warmth that sits comfortably between those darker pieces and the medium warm brown of N-062226-6E2. The motif lines read off-white to cream with a honey-tan warmth at the edges where the agate and the etched field meet. The surface is semi-gloss throughout.

No cracks, chips, or surface damage are observed in any of the four photographs. This is an independent finding.

The four eye dzi, despite being newly crafted, carries the full visual grammar of an established lineage — the pairing structure, the dividing stripes, the ring constructions — while offering something older pieces rarely do: total surface clarity and photography that shows you exactly what you are receiving.

The Four Eye Motif

The Four Eye dzi (四眼天珠) is among the most widely recognised forms in the Tibetan dzi tradition. Four eyes are understood to extend protective awareness in all four cardinal directions simultaneously — watching, clearing obstacles, and creating conditions for forward movement. The tradition associates four-eye dzi with the removal of hindrances and the opening of paths that would otherwise remain closed. Four eyes also correspond to the Four Immeasurables of Buddhist teaching: loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity — a complete attitudinal framework held within a single bead. Whether worn, carried, or placed on an altar, the four-eye form is considered one of the foundational protective configurations in the dzi canon.
