The Tibetan dzi bead tradition is well documented. What is less often discussed is what happened when that tradition crossed into China — when the motifs and the making methods were adopted by Chinese craftsmen working in the Chinese cultural and spiritual context, and what those beads look like three hundred years later.
This is a Qing Dynasty Chinese dzi, estimated at over 300 years old, and it announces its origin quietly but clearly. The eye motif — three eyes across this bead — is present in the characteristic Chinese expression: the rings are slightly softer in outline than the hard-edged Tibetan form, and on the reverse face, the two eyes sit side by side with a gentle kidney quality to their shape, a rendering style associated with the Chinese dzi-making tradition of the 17th and 18th centuries. This is not a Tibetan bead. It is a Chinese interpretation of the same symbolic language, produced during one of China's most culturally productive dynasties, and it has survived in exceptional condition.
The agate itself is a distinguishing feature. Where many antique dzi carry dark brown or near-black grounds, this bead is built on a warm cream and soft brown palette — light, glowing, almost luminous in certain light. The natural flow banding of the agate moves through the body in long, gentle curves, visible beneath and around the eye motifs. Look at Images 3 and 4: the concentric arc stripes wrap the body in a flowing pattern that follows the bead's own curvature, making the whole surface feel organic and alive. At one drill hole tip, a natural orange-red mineral formation sits at the centre of the hole entrance — a small but vivid detail that rewards close inspection and confirms the natural origin of the stone.
The bead measures 57.5mm × 13.0mm — long and slender, with the elegant torpedo taper that makes it one of the more graceful forms in any collection. At this length it would have been a focal bead — the centrepiece of a mala, a pendant on its own, or the commanding presence in a strand. The three eye motif carries the traditional meanings of happiness, success, and longevity, values that were equally at home in Qing court culture as in Himalayan practice.
This is an antique dzi bead in a category that rarely appears on the open market. Most Qing Dynasty Chinese dzi that survive are held in private collections or institutional holdings. Both drill holes are intact. The surface polish is smooth and even throughout. There are no cracks and no repairs. The condition for a 300+ year old bead is outstanding.
