The centre of the eye on this bead is not smooth — it is crystalline, granular, and matte, a sandy grey-brown druzy surface where the innermost zone of the agate formed a micro-crystalline matrix rather than the polished chalcedony fill seen in most naturally formed eyes.

This is the feature that makes this piece unlike any other in the collection. The eye itself is complete and unmistakable: a large, horizontally elongated concentric form sitting at the centre of the primary face, with a pale lavender-grey to white enclosing band and a warm reddish-brown outer zone. But where another naturally formed eye would carry a smooth polished pupil, this one carries a druzy interior — the crystalline geology of the agate's core left exposed and visible. Images 1, 5, and 6 all show it clearly.

The surface of the bead is equally unusual. The primary eye face — visible in image 1 — is semi-polished, and the two end faces at the tapered tips are polished, with warm honey-golden tones at both drill-hole ends. But the upper face, visible in images 2 and 4, retains the natural rough cortex of the agate nodule: undulating, ridged, organically striated, running from warm honey-gold at the rim through reddish-brown and deeper tones toward the crown. This is not wear or damage. It is the unmodified outer skin of the stone, kept intact, and it gives the bead a dual-texture character — raw geology on one axis, polished form on the other.

Image 3 shows the back face: no eye, the surface transitioning across warm honey-orange, reddish-brown, and a dark grey-purple zone at the lower centre. The banding is visible here as broad tonal shifts rather than the fine lines seen near the eye. A small natural irregularity is visible adjacent to the drill hole at the end shown in image 6 — disclosed.

At 36.8×16.1mm, this is the widest of the olive-form pieces in the collection relative to its length — shorter than some but proportionally broader, with a rounder, fuller profile than the more elongated forms.

The One Eye Motif

In the Tibetan and Himalayan bead tradition, the one eye dzi represents clarity, singular focus, and the protective gaze. On naturally formed pieces, the motif's meaning is extended by the fact of its origin — the eye exists because the stone's internal structure produced it, not because any craftsman placed it there. On this piece, the druzy centre adds a further dimension: what the stone produced at its core was not a simple enclosed zone but a field of crystals, which speaks to the geological depth from which the motif emerges.
