Twelve Eye Dzi, 51.9×12.9mm, Deep Warm Dark Chocolate-Brown Agate (Ac-061826-12E2)

We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

The twelve eyes on this bead are divided — six on each lateral face, arranged in two rows of three, framed into two rectangular panels by vertical dividers — and that structured, architectural organisation is itself a statement: this is not a bead where the eyes wander. They are placed.

Each of the twelve eyes is a fully closed concentric ring. The outer ring is bold cream-white. The interior zone is deep warm dark chocolate-brown ground. At the centre of every eye sits a warm honey-brown pupil — not a dot, not a void, but a distinct warm tone that reads as an interior light source within each ring. Across twelve repetitions, on two faces, at a size of 51.9×12.9mm, that consistency is remarkable. Not one eye deviates.

The ground of this bead is deep warm dark chocolate-brown natural agate — not pitch-black. The flat-lit photographs on a white background establish the true colour: a deep, saturated dark brown with warmth in the undertone, especially visible in the zones immediately surrounding the eye rings and in the end cap areas. The motif lines are bright cream-white throughout, bold in width, carrying the mineralised density expected of ancient acid-etched agate that has had five to eight centuries to stabilise. Where the bead appears darker in the angled photographs, that is a function of light and angle, not a different ground colour. The flat shots are the reference.

The form is a classic elongated fusiform — widest at the centre, tapering symmetrically to rounded tips — and at 51.9mm it sits at the longer end of the ancient twelve-eye range. The end caps at both tips are warm reddish-brown, slightly warmer in tone than the body ground, providing a subtle tonal transition rather than a sharp colour boundary. The drill holes at both tips are small, clean, and well-centred. No enlargement, no damage at either entrance. The surface finish is semi-gloss to gloss — smooth under handling, with fine age micro-texture visible in the inter-eye zones when examined at close range, consistent with a bead of this age that has been well preserved rather than heavily worn.

Condition is excellent. No cracks. No chips. No medicine digs. No pinholes. No rework. The photographs show what is there and nothing is being omitted.

Differentiation note: The only other twelve-eye dzi in this collection, Ac-030223-12E, is a carnelian bead in hexagonal form, 28.2×9.3mm, with a bicolour terracotta-orange to deep grey-brown ground. This bead is natural agate, elongated fusiform, 51.9×12.9mm, deep warm dark chocolate-brown throughout — a different material, a different form, and nearly twice the length. The two beads share a motif count and nothing else.

The Twelve Eye Motif

The twelve-eye motif (十二眼天珠, shí'èr yǎn tiānzhū) carries one of the highest numerical values in the Tibetan dzi tradition. Twelve is a number of completion and cosmic structure: twelve months in the Tibetan lunar calendar, twelve deeds of the historical Buddha, twelve ornaments of the imperial robe in Chinese imperial tradition. A bead carrying twelve eyes is understood as holding all of that structural wholeness in a single object — not twelve separate protective forces, but twelve as a unified count that closes the cycle.

In practice, twelve-eye dzi are among the rarer counts in ancient collections. Most high-eye-count beads in circulation are nine-eye or six-eye forms. Twelve requires a longer bead body to accommodate the full composition, which is part of why this example — at 51.9mm — reads immediately as a significant piece. The length is not incidental. It is what makes twelve possible.

A twelve-eye bead at this scale and in this condition does not come around often — and this one has been waiting five to eight centuries for someone who knows what they are looking at.
