The seven eyes on this bead do not all face the same direction — rotating the bead slowly reveals eyes in pairs, then a solo eye, then pairs again, each face presenting the motif from a different geometry as the composition completes its full circuit.

This antique seven eye dzi carries one of the rarest eye counts in the Tibetan dzi tradition, and the first antique seven eye barrel in this collection. The seven eyes are distributed across the faces of the bead: paired eyes appear on the main faces, linked by S-curve wave connector lines that flow between the eye zones with a fluency quite different from the straight vertical connectors seen on many eye dzi. From one angle two eyes appear with arching connectors above and below; turn the bead and a face with two larger, more boldly framed eyes comes into view; turn again and the connector elements shift into a more structural, geometric reading around their pair. The seventh eye completes the count — appearing in a zone where the composition briefly presents as a single element before the rotation brings the next pair into alignment.

The ground is pitch-black through the central body, confirmed from the flat-lit white-background photographs. The cream motif lines are bright and bold against this dark field — the eyes and connector elements reading with strong contrast at three to five centuries of age. The end caps at both tips are a warm cream-beige tone, distinctly lighter than the pitch-black body — a two-zone colour structure in which the bead's dark centre gives way to the warmer, lighter tone at each rounded drill tip. Both drill openings are small and clean.

The surface carries age-consistent micro-texture across the dark body zones — a fine matte character that has developed over centuries. Fine age-consistent surface marks are present. No chips or cracks observed from available photos.

The Seven Eye Motif

Seven is among the most auspicious numbers in Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The seven eye dzi is associated with Chenrezig — Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion — and with the seven branches of practice through which merit is accumulated and purification achieved: prostration, offering, confession, rejoicing, requesting teachings, beseeching the teacher to remain, and dedication of merit. Seven eyes are also understood in some traditions as seeing in all directions simultaneously — the forward-facing pair, the side-facing pairs, the upward eye, and the downward eye — representing omnidirectional awareness. The seven eye dzi is said to bring comprehensive protection, the fulfilment of wishes across all seven directions of space, and the gradual perfection of the seven branches of merit-accumulation in the wearer's life.
