This bead is vintage, not antique. Crafted before the year 2000 with a deliberate antique-style finish, it has since picked up over two decades of its own genuine age — and we want that distinction clear from the first line.

This piece is a different style and make from the S-meander Nine Eye family already in our collection (V-FA-062026-9E, 9E2, 9EA1, and 9EA3). Where that family uses a continuous curved S-meander line with open C-ring eyes, this bead is built on a rectilinear lattice — straight H-bar and step-line dividers forming a grid of compartments, with small diamond-shaped eye forms set inside, each with a dark centre point. Both share the "Nine Eye" name, but the construction, palette, and overall visual effect are distinct enough that they should be understood as two separate design traditions rather than variations on one.

The ground colour is a high-gloss, uniform black across every photograph in this set, with no warm-brown or olive transitional tones anywhere on the surface. The motif itself is rendered in a matte, sandy-cream tone with a noticeably raised, almost stucco-like texture — a different surface quality from the smooth glossy fill seen on our S-meander pieces, and worth noting for anyone comparing the two families side by side. The diamond eye forms are compact and angular rather than round, set within a tight rectilinear frame of straight dividing lines.

Both end caps are intact, finished in the same black ground colour with a cream ring band near each tip, and both drill openings are clean, round, and centred with no irregularities visible in any photograph.

We're disclosing all of this the same way we disclose the bead's overall age category: directly. This is not a centuries-old antique dzi. It was made with that visual tradition in mind, sometime before 2000, and what you're buying today is a piece that has now genuinely aged for twenty-plus years past its original finishing — different from both a brand-new reproduction and from a verified antique with documented centuries of provenance.

In terms of form, the bead is a compact, broad-shouldered barrel, noticeably shorter and proportionally wider than our S-meander Nine Eye pieces. Surface gloss is even and consistent across all faces, with no cracks visible at any angle. No bloodspot inclusions are visible anywhere in this photo set.

The Nine Eye Motif

In Tibetan dzi tradition, the Nine Eye is regarded as the most complete of all dzi motifs — sometimes called the king of dzi designs. Nine is read as a number of totality, drawing together the protective and prosperity-bringing qualities attributed to dzi beads in general into a single concentrated design. Worn or kept close, the Nine Eye is traditionally associated with the gathering of good fortune across every aspect of life it touches.
